Minutenschnell sinkt ein Segelboot nach der Kollision mit einem Frachter vor der Isle of Skye, Meilen vor Schottlands wilder Küste. Zehn Jahre später kehrt Anne an den Ort des Geschehens zurück, um herauszufinden, was damals passiert ist. In einem einsamen Tal kauft sie von einem charismatischen Deutschen eine romantische Wassermühle. Der Mann fasziniert sie, und bereits nach kurzer Zeit vertraut sie ihm blind. Sie ahnt nicht, dass dieser charmante, freundliche Mann ein Massenmörder ist, der in Deutschland und in Italien bereits mehrere Kinder getötet hat und sich seit Jahren unbehelligt in den toskanischen Bergen versteckt hält.

Edwards's assured but schematic debut novel (after her collection, The Secrets of a Fire King) hinges on the birth of fraternal twins, a healthy boy and a girl with Down syndrome, resulting in the father's disavowal of his newborn daughter. A snowstorm immobilizes Lexington, Ky., in 1964, and when young Norah Henry goes into labor, her husband, orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Henry, must deliver their babies himself, aided only by a nurse. Seeing his daughter's handicap, he instructs the nurse, Caroline Gill, to take her to a home and later tells Norah, who was drugged during labor, that their son Paul's twin died at birth. Instead of institutionalizing Phoebe, Caroline absconds with her to Pittsburgh. David's deception becomes the defining moment of the main characters' lives, and Phoebe's absence corrodes her birth family's core over the course of the next 25 years. David's undetected lie warps his marriage; he grapples with guilt; Norah mourns her lost child; and Paul not only deals with his parents' icy relationship but with his own yearnings for his sister as well. Though the impact of Phoebe's loss makes sense, Edwards's redundant handling of the trope robs it of credibility. This neatly structured story is a little too moist with compassion.

Hier gewinnt er rasch Freunde, die ihm helfen, als der schreckliche Waldemar Wichteltod mit seinen riesigen Nußknackern auftaucht. Sie wollen Niklas Julebukk in einen Schokoladennikolaus verwandeln. (Ab 8 Jahre.)Cornelia Funke wurde 1958 in Dorsten/Westfalen geboren. Sie absolvierte in Hamburg eine Ausbildung zur Diplom-Pädagogin und arbeitete drei Jahre lang als Erzieherin. Parallel dazu studierte sie an der Kunstfachhochschule für Buchillustration. Zunächst arbeitete sie ausschließlich als Illustratorin für Kinderbücher, die sie dazu anregten, selbst Geschichten für junge Leserinnen und Leser zu schreiben.

The four holiday stories collected in Mistletoe revel in the clichés of the season but are unexpectedly fresh nonetheless.  In “Working in a Winter Wonderland” by Aimee Friedman (South Beach), spunky New York fashionista Max Silver lands a job as one of Santa’s elves at a department store owned by her crush’s dad.  But what’s a Hanukkah girl living in a Christmas world to do when she starts obsessing over the Nutcracker Prince?  In “Have Yourself a Merry Little Breakup” by Hailey Abbott (Summer Boys), two best friends and their boyfriends are reunited at Christmas when the oldest comes home from college.  But can their friendships survive distance—and a certain stolen kiss?  “Scenes from a Cinematic New Year’s” by Nina Malkin (6X: The Uncensored Confessions) stars “spoiled, jaded, been-there-hooked-up-with-that” TV hottie Connor Moline, who winds up stranded in the middle of nowhere with a very unusual girl.  Finally, “The Christmas Choos” by Melissa de la Cruz (The Au Pairs and Blue Bloods) mixes elements of “The Gift of the Magi” and “Mean Girls” into a story about a pretty girl from the wrong side of town who’s torn between her sweet boyfriend and her status-conscious friend.

Anna Gavalda ist eine Art literarische Fachfrau fürs Verlassen und Verlassenwerden, für missglückte Leben und Lieben -- Lieben, in denen sich nicht zuletzt die Dinge selbst gegen zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen verschwören. In ihrem Überraschungserfolg Ich wünsche mir, daß irgendwo jemand auf mich wartet waren es unter anderem ein Handy, ein Sportwagen und ein IKEA-Bett, die das Zusammenleben zwischen Mann und Frau auf recht unterschiedliche Arten und Weisen zumindest im Wege standen. Und in dem Nachfolgeband Ich habe sie geliebt muss die Protagonistin erfahren, dass sie sich mit ihrem Mann (wegen eines knarrenden Bettgestells) wohl allzu diskret geliebt hat, um ihr gegenseitiges Begehren über die Jahre zu retten. In Gavaldas -- im Übrigen wieder einmal wundervoll einfühlsam von Ina Kronenberger ins Deutsche übertragenen -- Roman Zusammen ist man weniger allein nun geht es einmal mehr um die Sehnsucht nach Liebe und Geborgenheit: an Hand von Menschen, die in einer Pariser Wohngemeinschaft eher zufällig zusammengekommen sind.

Jordan Buchanan is thrilled that her brother and best friend are tying the knot. The wedding is a lavish affair–for the marriage of Dylan Buchanan and Kate MacKenna is no ordinary occasion. It represents the joining of two family dynasties. The ceremony and reception proceed without a hitch–until a crasher appears claiming to be a MacKenna guest. So she is intrigued but skeptical of the professor’s claims that the feud has been kept alive by the grave injustices the Buchanans have perpetrated over the centuries. But when Noah Clayborne, a close family friend and a man who has never let a good time or a pretty girl pass him by, accuses Jordan of being trapped in her comfort zone, she determines to prove him wrong and sets out on a spontaneous adventure to the small, dusty town of Serenity, Texas, to judge the professor’s research for herself.

Hanna hat keinen Freund. Und sie hat die klassische Eieruhrfigur. Zu beidem steht sie. Trotzdem muss man Letzteres ja nicht gleich in die Cyberwelt hinausposaunen. Prompt lernt sie beim Chatten "Boris" kennen, endlich den Mann, der all das zu haben scheint, was Hanna sich wünscht. Beim Online-Partnerschaftstest erreicht er 397 von 400 Punkten. Einem Real-Date steht nichts mehr im Weg. Wäre da nicht der neue Chef. Der ist nämlich sehr viel charmanter als zunächst vermutet und ein ernsthafter Konkurrent für den 397-Punkte-Mann aus der Chat-Runde ...

When Dana and Hugh Clarke's baby is born into their wealthy, white New England seaside community, the baby's unmistakably African-American features puzzle her thoroughly Anglo-looking parents. Hugh's family pedigree extends back to the Mayflower, and his historian father has made a career of tracing the esteemed Clarke family genealogy, which does not include African-Americans. Dana's mother died when Dana was a child, and Dana never knew her father: she matter-of-factly figures that baby Lizzie's features must hark back to her little-known past. Hugh, a lawyer who has always passionately defended his minority clients, finds his liberal beliefs don't run very deep and demands a paternity test to rule out the possibility of infidelity. By the time the Clarkes have uncovered the tangled roots of their family trees, more than one skeleton has been unearthed, and the couple's relationship—not to mention their family loyalty—has been severely tested. Delinsky (Looking for Peyton Place) smoothly challenges characters and readers alike to confront their hidden hypocrisies. Although the dialogue about race at times seems staged and rarely delves beyond a surface level, and although near-perfect Dana and her knitting circle are too idealized to be believable, Delinsky gets the political and personal dynamics right.

In diesem spritzigen und temporeichen Roman findet sich aber auch alles, was zu einer turbulenten Geschichte gehört: Hin- und Hergerissensein zwischen langjährigem Ehemann und alter Flamme, intensive Beratung mit Freundinnen, die Angst, etwas „zu verpassen“, wenn man das luxuriöse Leben als Doppelverdiener eintauscht gegen Familienidylle mit Baby. Dabei hat Eva, aus deren Sicht die Geschichte erzählt wird, doch noch so viele Wünsche. Die sollen sich erst erfüllen, bevor die Baby-Frage nochmals auf die Tagesordnung kommt: zentral in München wohnen, Ayers Rock umwandern, eine Fotoausstellung machen, ein Wochenende durchfeiern, auf einem Andalusier den Strand entlang galoppieren und: ein Abenteuer erleben. Klare Sache: Verwicklungen, Sehnsüchte und Ängste sind vorprogrammiert. Und es versteht sich, dass Eva vor dem Hintergrund des intensiven Babywunsches ihres Mannes Manches plötzlich in anderem Licht sieht: „Urlaub, genügend Schlaf, guter Wein und weiße Laken, was ergibt das?“
